JOCUM no Haiti

YWAM affiliates, RescueNet, Mercy Works and Hope Force teams are joining YWAM Haiti in their efforts to bring aid to the victims of the Haiti earthquake where over 100 000 people are thought to have perished.

YWAM Haiti’s national director, Terry Snow, has been in Haiti for 17 years. He lives in St.Marc, about 60 miles from the epicenter of the quake, which took place in the capital, Port-au-Prince. YWAM’s staff and students in the nation of Haiti were unharmed, although some of their buildings sustained damage. YWAM’s other location in Gonaive is 10 miles away from the capital.

Terry reports that on the night of the earthquake, “Every 30 minutes to an hour the house rumbled and shook from the after shocks of the earthquake that has devasted Port-au-Prince. It was hard to sleep wondering if you should run, wait or ignore it. All I could think about was the thousands that had nowhere to sleep in Port-au-Prince 60 miles away…

The St.Marc team is assessing how they can help, as other YWAM teams make their way to Port-au-Prince and donations are coming in. Terry adds, “Haiti has no infrastructure much less a crisis management team…We are also thinking through how this will affect St. Marc and the population here. Fuel, electric communications, food and construction supplies all route through Port-Au-Prince. Today we are ok, but what about in a few days or a week. Where are the refugees going to be going since there is little living space in the capital?”

YWAM teams are being mobilized to provide medical care, grief counselors and construction workers and as usual will be involved in re-development efforts for the long-term.  Please pray, please give, and please keep checking our site for information on how you can be involved in helping the victims of Haiti’s earthquake.
