Punk Movement’s History Worldwide and in Brazil

In a time when the music that played on the radio lasted ten to fifteen minutes with great guitar solos and drums, arises a fast music, short and simple, played by guys who were tired of hearing hippie hymns and decided to do their own music though they didn’t know how to play even a chord. Thus punk rock is born in New York, in 1974 and 1975, having as main representative the Ramones. They already come by significant influences such as MC5 and Stooges and started to play without any pretense but fun, trying to rescue a little rock from the ’50s and ’60s.
Almost at the same time punk was born, the New York Dolls, main band to represent glam rock was over – they dressed as woman besides they used bronze powder, make-up and their businessman was a figure that not long later would become the punk’s key piece, an English man called Malcom McLaren. Realizing how much the New York Dolls were overcome, Malcom ends up with the band and influenced by New York’s scene, goes back to London with an idea in his mind. That’s how Sex Pistols was born, created by Malcom McLaren and his wife Vivienne Westwood. They gathered some frequenters of their shop and incorporated to them the New York’s scene vision – with some personal touches from Vivienne stylist – as well as the music style already experienced by Malcom, with political tones.
In December 1st of 1976, the group was invited to participate of a TV show nationally assisted, conveyed at 5 p.m., teatime in London. For the first time the word “fuck off” was pronounced on national – of course by the most polemic member of the group: Johnny Rotten – then the band turns to be the target of the entire British press, becoming a real phenomenon.
In November 12th of 1976, the group released their first and only album: Never Mind the Bollocks, Here is The Sex Pistols.
Before Sex Pistols, Ramones had already recorded their first vinyl, Ramones, launched in 1976. So, punk happens in the whole world with Ramones, Sex Pistol, The Clash and many other bands.
Inevitably, what happened in the world comes to Brazil – of course that some time later and with some different characteristics. Some say that in 1976 some groups from Brasília already listened to Ramones but the scene really grew stronger in São Paulo from 1977 on. During the military dictatorship the youth aggregates that new protestant sound to their realities. Through a few number of magazines published in Brazil with pictures of Ramones and Sex Pistols, the people started to imitate their visual: jeans. White t-shirt, pins in the clothes and faces, as a form of aggression against society and the system.
Between 1977 and 1980, punks were basically street gangues which had in common the way they dressed, the music they listened to and the hatred they had towards each other. On the earlier ‘80s, São Paulo City’s gangues started to get united but they still had some rivalry with ABC’s punks (industrial’s region of the State). In 1982, Clemente, Inncentes band’s vocalist, Redson, Colera band’s vocalist and some more punks from São Paulo decide to make a festival to unite São Paulo city’s and ABC’s punks. A little suspicious, ABC’s punks decide to come to São Paulo to participate of the festival, and so, was organized the “Beginning of the End of the World”, historical festival held at Pompéia’s SESC. The festival ends up in brawl and police versus punks and is registered as one of the biggest punk festivals in Brazil. In 2001 and 2002, São Paulo’s Mayor Marta Suplicy organizes two other festivals celebrating the 20 years of the “Beginning…”:“One Step to the End of the World” and “The End of the World” with many bands that took part in1982.
Though punk movement is similar in all countries, each one gained their own particular aspects as time passed by. When it came to Brazil, the movement was apolitical but it was in mid ‘80s that it assumed features of movement titled to the left and some punks started to collaborate with the anarchists fully directed towards the political activism, with more active discussions and actions, opposing to traditional media, the State, religious institutions and large capitalist corporations.
In 1988 some punks officially gathered with anarchist groups, thus creating the Anarchopunks. In general the movement defends values such as anti-male chauvinism, anti-homophobia, anti-fascism, individual freedom, self-education, etc.
We can say that punks were looking for a revolution, for the breaking of the bourgeois’ ideas. They divulged their ideas through music, alternative media – such as fanzines and mainly through their speech. In general they avoided mass media, like TV, to disseminate their ideas for they believed such media were large lies’ manipulators to society, distorting facts to self benefit.
“Punk is a socio-cultural movement, is the revolt of the youth from the lower classes, transported through music” said Clemente, Inocentes band’s vocalist in a letter in response, not dated, to a newspaper story entitled “Abandoned Generation”, published by O Estado de São Paulo, also with no date set, in 1982.
Since the arrival of punk culture in Brazil until today, the majority of the punks are young people that come from outskirts of the city. The music, with its government speech, the calling to confrontation, the struggle against poverty speaks directly to these young people causing them to identify themselves and start to actively participate of the movement.
Ivone Cecília D’ávila, Doctorate in Social History – PUC (Catholic University) Campinas-SP wrote in the magazine “Varia História, vol. 24, n° 40- Punk: Cultura e Arte”: “the usual coping in the cities’ outskirts was adapted to meet the communications needs in the fight against capitalism and the consumer society. In this point, violence answers to different needs: repel police violence, repel in a general way hierarchical relations and all kind of repression that contributes to generate, affirm the rebel posture and the world’s culture from where it derives.”
But it’s not only violence in favour of their ideals that exists in the movement. Though some punks don’t belong to any group, gangues still haunt the movement. The fights between gangues or between punks and skinheads (neo-Nazis) still exist. The most severe cases, that usually end up in death come to the press, which mistakenly rates the entire movement as very violent.
And it’s in the midst of a lot of music, debates, violence, policy, visual, anarchy, history, fights, etc that punks survive until today in Brazil.

opa!Parabéns pela matéria, a boa vontade é sempre algo a ser aplaudida por ter a manifestação sobre o movimento punk de São Paulo.Também Sou do inicio do Movimento punk de SP, onde a explosão punk tomou conta da periferia da Z sul de SP com o nascimento da Phuneral Punk em 76 aqui por esses lados, lógo no final de 79 estavamos saindo da Z sul pra frequentar tb o centro no Lgo São Bento onde estavam também a maioria das gangues de todos os lados…e assim: historia continua pq também escrevi um livro sobre toda essa época historia e conturbada de nossas vidas, o livro se chama: SP PUNK-PHUNERAL PUNK ”OS SOBREVIVENTES”.Obriado pela oportunidade também. pois somos todos sobreviventes!!

vivemos sempre aprendendo culturas da rua ,muitos de nós não trabalhamos ,obiservamos bastante a nossa cultura ,fazemos protestos quando a coisa não esta nos agradando ,somos basicamentes como adão e eva
gostamos da liberdade de pensar e agir ´muitas regras humanas q politicos corruptos fazem nos agride bastante ,porisso nos somos tão revoltados porisso as letras nas musicas de guerra e luta contra o sistema mesmo sabendo que quem faz o sistema somos “nos”mas nossas historias são atos de heroicos coseguimos bastante coisa com nossos protestos somos do abcmas gostamos de liberdade não há como impedir isso de nós punx não morreram punx não morreram!!

pô maior essencia,nao tenho intimidade com com internete,e numca procurei ler relatos sobre punk parabens thi,vida longa,e tambem ao paulinho vou procura com carinho seu livro.nao sei se posso dizer q sou das antiga,nao pensem tambem q fui infruenciado a ser,ou melhor curti o som.sou d 85,e meu primeiro presente dado pelo padrinho foi uma vitrola e tres disco de vinil,vervel undergroud,jimi hendrix e sex pistols do qual tenho ate hoje embora fora escondida de mim por 7anos e estava entre o q procurava

Só uma correção a fazer, os punks tem conflitos com os carecas, não exatamente com os skinheads, grupos de skins, como o SHARP e o RASH, sempre estiveram do mesmo lado que os punks…
E PORRA, tu só usou nomes da mídia pra ilustrar a matéria, cadê as bandas underground nessas horas

Cara, esse artigo disse tudo o que o Punk é, esse movimento ta ai, é muito mais do que roupas, guitarras e letras de musicas, Punks são revolucionários e estão ai pra mudar o mundo, espero que pessoas desenformadas e preconceituosas leiam essa matéria e entendam o que o Punk é. Punk, eu sou punk e odeio tudo aquilo que é anti-ético e se precisar de ser extremista pra mudar as coisas erradas nós Punks iremos até o fim. Parabéns pela matéria ficou muito boa!!

Bom, gostei da matéria é realmente muito boa, eu admiro atitude, e com meios alternativos de se manifestar a atitude se torna mais polêmica a atentiva. O movimento PUNK só está divulgado aqui pois fez história, baseando-se em novos modelos de sociedade por parte da burguesia inserida e anti-corrupção da política idiota do nossos dias.
O movimento PUNK tem que continuar e ser ouvido e praticado!!!!
